The unexpectedly short Holocene Humid Period in Northern Arabia

چکیده

Abstract The early to middle Holocene Humid Period led a greening of today’s arid Saharo-Arabian desert belt. While this phase is well defined in North Africa and the Southern Arabian Peninsula, robust evidence from Northern Arabia lacking. Here we fill gap with unprecedented annually sub-decadally resolved proxy data Tayma, only known varved lake sediments Arabia. Based on stable isotopes, micro-facies analyses varve radiocarbon dating, distinguish five phases development show that wet 8800–7900 years BP considerably shorter than commonly (~11,000–5500 BP). Moreover, find two century-long peak humidity at times when centennial-scale dry anomaly around 8200 interrupted adjacent regions. short humid possibly favoured Neolithic migrations into representing strong human response environmental changes.

Mediterranean moisture source for an early-Holocene humid period in the northern Red Sea.

Paleosalinity and terrigenous sediment input changes reconstructed on two sediment cores from the northernmost Red Sea were used to infer hydrological changes at the southern margin of the Mediterranean climate zone during the Holocene. Between approximately 9.25 and 7.25 thousand years ago, about 3 per thousand reduced surface water salinities and enhanced fluvial sediment input suggest substa...

Holocene climate instability during the termination of the African Humid Period

[1] The termination of the Holocene African Humid Period ( 9 to 6 kyr BP) is simulated with a threedimensional global coupled climate model that resolves synoptic variability associated with weather patterns. In the simulation, the potential for ‘‘green’’ and ‘‘desert’’ Sahara states becomes equal between 7.5 and 5.5 thousand years ago, causing the climate system to fluctuate between these stat...

Early Holocene chicken domestication in northern China.

Chickens represent by far the most important poultry species, yet the number, locations, and timings of their domestication have remained controversial for more than a century. Here we report ancient mitochondrial DNA sequences from the earliest archaeological chicken bones from China, dating back to ∼ 10,000 B.P. The results clearly show that all investigated bones, including the oldest from t...

Mid-Holocene climate in the south-central Andes: humid or dry?

South-Central Andes: Humid or Dry? Betancourt et al. (1) recently challenged the prevailing view that the central Andes were a generally arid zone during the midHolocene (2–7). This debate has wide implications regarding monsoonal and westerly paleocirculation in this area. The archives used by Betancourt et al. (1) are organic and inorganic alluvial deposits that formed in steep valleys along ...
